Practice AreasConnecticut Civil Union AgreementsWith the historic signing of Connecticut’s “Act Concerning Civil Unions” in April, 2005, Connecticut has become the second state in the U.S. to legally recognize same-sex unions and to bestow upon same-sex couples some of the rights and responsibilities that opposite-sex couples receive upon entering into marriage. Because this is a new law, we refer you to additional information about the rights and responsibilities gained with civil union and the implementation of the law in a document produced by Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD): “Some Questions and Answers About the New Connecticut Civil Unions Law, First Edition, April 27 2005.” Civil union is certainly a step forward in acknowledging the needs of same-sex families, but it is not the same as marriage. As such, it is appropriate for couples to create additional legal agreements to ensure that their rights are enforceable in Connecticut and any other state in which they may need to rely upon them.
